Elon Musk Wishes Boeing 'Still Made That Plane' In Personal Pick Over Airbus A380: 'Almost Supersonic In A Dive'

Tesla Inc and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk on Tuesday said that he would prefer a Boeing plane over an Airbus one.

What Happened: Musk picked the Boeing 747 over the Airbus A380 in a poll on X, formerly Twitter.

“747. I wish Boeing still made that plane,” Musk wrote.

The 747, developed by Boeing Co BA, was formerly called the original jumbo jet or even queen of the skies. It is the world’s first twin-aisle airplane with production starting in 1967.

The last 747 aircraft was delivered to Atlas Air in January after Boeing confirmed in July 2020 that it would end its production.

Explaining his preference for the Boeing aircraft, Musk said that the 747 is almost supersonic in a dive.

“My understanding is that the 747-8i can cruise at Mach 0.92, which makes it the fastest jumbo jet. 747 has achieved Mach 0.99, so almost supersonic in a dive,” he wrote.

The second option, the Airbus A380, was developed by the European aerospace company Airbus SE EADSY to challenge the dominance of the 747. Despite initial success after its reveal in 2005, Airbus delivered the last of the world’s largest airliners to Dubai’s Emirates in December 2021.

Why It Matters: Musk is seemingly a fan of Boeing’s engineering. Last month, he offered help to Boeing with its Starliner spacecraft.

"SpaceX provided its knowledge of crewed parachute systems to Boeing and we are happy to be helpful in any other ways," Musk said.

The Starliner was aiming to launch in late July with two astronauts onboard to the International Space Station. Still, it was delayed indefinitely after a supplier flagged an issue with the parachute.

"Designing parachutes for orbital, crewed spacecraft is much harder than it may seem. Was a major challenge for SpaceX," the CEO then added.
