Tesla Makes FSD 20% Cheaper Despite Musk's Grumbles About Price Already Being 'Very Low'

Electric vehicle giant Tesla Inc TSLA has made a significant reduction in the cost of its full self-driving capability.

The feature’s price has been lowered to $12,000, marking a 20% decrease from its previous cost of $15,000.

Interestingly, this price cut comes despite CEO Elon Musk‘s earlier statement that the $15,000 price tag on the FSD capability is “very low.”

In the recent second-quarter earnings call, Musk emphasized that the value of a vehicle substantially increases with autonomy.

Musk responded to a query about lowering the FSD price, stating, “But I think yes, yes — obviously, if the car is worth several times its original price, $15,000 is actually a low price for FSD.”

To provide more flexibility to customers, Musk revealed that Tesla users can now opt for FSD through a monthly subscription instead of committing to the $15,000 upfront payment.

Tesla also introduced a one-time option allowing existing customers to transfer their FSD software package from their old Tesla vehicle to a new one in the third quarter.

This move aims to prevent customers from being tied to their current car solely due to the FSD price.

Musk had clarified this new provision, saying, “This is a one-time amnesty…I hope this makes people happy.”
