Malaysia In Talks With Google, Meta Over News Content Payment Regulations

Malaysia is considering implementing regulations that would require Alphabet Inc’s GOOGL GOOG Google and Meta Platforms META to compensate news outlets for content sourced from them, Reuters reported.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is in talks with Google, Meta, and other significant online platforms regarding this potential regulatory framework.

The proposed regulations will be akin to the 2021 rules in Australia, which made it mandatory for Google and Meta to compensate media outlets for content that generates clicks and advertisement revenue, MCMC said.

The MCMC is also reflecting on regulations similar to Canada’s Bill C-11, aimed at regulating streaming platforms and mandates them to support Canadian content.

The MCMC stated that these rules were part of government efforts to address “imbalances” in income for digital platforms and local media, and to ensure “fair compensation for news content creators.”

Under Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Malaysia has heightened its scrutiny of online content.
