Apple's Latest iMac Patent Gives A Glimpse Into The Future Of Desktops, And It Looks Foldable

Desktops aren't always the sleekest machines, but Apple Inc.'s AAPL latest iMac patent gives us a peek into what this could look like in reality.

What Happened: Apple has filed a patent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for a foldable iMac. While it does not use a folding display, it has a folding glass panel at the bottom, giving us a picture of a refined and elegant-looking desktop.

Apple has filed a patent for foldable MacBooks and is also working on a foldable iPad. While there have been murmurs of foldable iMacs before, this time is slightly different since the display itself is not foldable.

Still, a sleek-looking desktop could add the zing that is missing from Apple's iMac lineup.

More Than Just The Looks: It's not all about the looks either with this folding iMac patent – Apple's descriptions and drawings suggest that the company intends to make it as compact as possible, like a notebook.

To achieve this, the patent describes that the front folding glass can be easily folded on the bottom, so it takes up as little space as possible.

On the other hand, the keyboard and trackpad can be slid out from behind whenever you want to use the iMac and neatly wrapped up on the back when you're done with your work.

Overall, Apple's drawings point at an extremely sleek, futuristic-looking iMac – even though it's not one of Apple's best sellers, the company hasn't given up on it yet. On an optimistic note, this could also spur Windows desktop makers to give their designs more thought than they do now.
