Is Apple's Confidence Waning? iPhone 15 Orders Dip, But This Top-Tier Model May Steal The Show

As we inch closer to the September 12 ‘Wonderlust' launch event of Apple Inc.'s AAPL iPhone 15 series, a new report suggests that Apple is being cautious and expecting lower demand compared to last year's iPhone 15 series.

What Happened: Apple is likely expecting weaker demand for the iPhone 15 compared to the iPhone 14, slashing its orders by millions of units, according to a report by DigiTimes.

Apple has reportedly placed 80-90 million orders for the iPhone 15 series for the second half of 2023, as compared to 90-100 million orders for the iPhone 14 series last year.

Based on this, Apple is expecting 10 million fewer orders for the iPhone 15 series on average.

Apple is also said to have shifted some orders away from Foxconn to two of its other suppliers, Luxshare and Pegatron. Foxconn remains Apple's biggest manufacturing partner, though.

This aligns with previous reports by noted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and Sony, one of Apple's key suppliers – both sources have projected weaker demand for the iPhone 15 compared to the iPhone 14.

Apple's Surprise Bet: The share of Apple's most expensive phones, the iPhone 15 Pro Max and the iPhone 15 Pro, is increasing despite an overall decrease in the order size.

Earlier, Kuo said that the top-tier iPhone 15 Pro Max could become the best-selling iPhone despite being the most expensive iPhone so far.

One of the reasons, according to Kuo, is the major camera upgrade Apple has in store. "It means Apple is optimistic about the selling point of the periscope, which is only available in iPhone 15 Pro Max," Kuo said.

The iPhone 15 Pro Max will be the only iPhone 15 model to sport the new periscope camera. The upcoming iPhone flagship is expected to feature a triple camera setup on the back with the new lens system.

A periscope lens system would allow Apple to achieve superior lossless zoom at levels like 5x or higher compared to a traditional system.
