EV giant Tesla Inc‘s TSLA Gigafactory in Shanghai has hit a new production milestone.
What Happened: The factory has produced 2 million vehicles as of today, Tesla’s Asia handle said on X. The post was adjoined by a picture of the team at the factory posing with that model in their midst.
Tesla’s Shanghai gigafactory is the U.S. EV maker’s sole one in China or Asia for that matter. Tesla builds Model 3 and Y cars at the factory for both the domestic China market and for export to other geographies.
The first vehicles rolled out of the factory in 2019. It took the company 33 months to scale production and produce its millionth vehicle. It took only 13 months to make a million more.
Why It Matters: During his visit to China earlier this year, CEO Elon Musk said that the cars produced in China are not just the most efficient but also the highest quality.
“I would very much like to congratulate you on the amazing work that you've done. It's been incredibly impressive how you have been able to overcome so many difficulties and so many challenges. I just wanted to let you know that it warms my heart,"Â Musk said while addressing the workforce.
In late March, Tesla said it had achieved a weekly production capacity of 5,000 vehicles at its Giga Berlin plant. The company is now looking to scale production capacity at the factory to one million vehicles per year from 500,000 units.
