Trump's Criminal Cases To Hurt Re-election Prospects? What A New Poll Reveals

Donald Trump has come on top in yet another survey, commanding at least a 34-point lead over his nearest rival in the Republican primary race, with not many unduly worried about the prospect of his re-election in the face of the mounting criminal charges.

What Happened: Trump received the support of 52% of the survey respondents, up from the mid-June number of 47%, a new CNN poll showed.

The study was conducted on behalf of CNN by SSRS, an independent research company, between Aug. 25 and 31. Responses were collected from 1,503 registered voters, out of which 898 were Republican and Republican-leaning independent voters.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis fell far behind with 18% of the respondents favoring him compared to the 26% support he commanded in mid-June. CNN's poll showed former Vice President Mike Pence and former U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley were tied at 7% each and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy had the support of 6% of the respondents.

Irrespective of whom the respondents supported, 28% felt it is “extremely likely” Trump is elected and 32% and 29%, respectively, think, he is “very likely” and “somewhat likely” to be elected.

Criminal Charges Shrugged Off: The GOP voter base is apparently not too worried about Trump's criminal charges hurting his election prospects.

About 56% of the respondents said they are not seriously concerned about the criminal charges against the former president impacting his ability to win the 2024 election if he wins the GOP primaries.

About 68% weren't seriously concerned the criminal charge would affect his ability to serve another full term as president if reelected. About 65% weren’t seriously concerned about his ability to be an effective president while facing criminal charges.

None of the four cases in which the former president is indicated was considered relevant to his fitness for the presidency, the survey found.
