Ron DeSantis Appoints Book Ban Group Co-Founder To State's Ethics Commission

Florida governor Ron DeSantis has selected the co-founder of a conservative advocacy group known for pushing for book bans for a role on the state’s Commission on Ethics, Business Insider reported.

DeSantis announced that he was appointing Tina Descovich, a former Brevard County school board member and co-founder of Moms for Liberty, to the commission.

Moms for Liberty, which states its mission as “stirring the fires of liberty” and “advocating for parental rights at all levels of government”, has endorsed book bans in schools. In July, the group successfully pushed for the removal of five books from high school libraries in Leon County, Florida. The group claimed these books contained harmful content.

Despite this, the group denies seeking to ban books. Earlier this year, Moms for Liberty co-founder Tiffany Justice said, “No one is looking to ban books. Moms for Liberty certainly isn’t. What we’re talking about is curating content in a library.”

However, the Southern Poverty Law Center has labeled Moms for Liberty an “extremist” group. It accused the organization of engaging in “anti-student inclusion activities” by advocating for book bans and opposing LGBTQIA+ topics and racially inclusive curricula in schools.
