In the face of his 2024 reelection bid, President Joe Biden is encountering serious challenges. According to a recent CNN poll, voters have expressed concerns about his age and job performance.
What Happened: A CNN report published on Thursday revealed that the poll showcased broad apprehension about Biden’s age and a lack of confidence among Democratic voters. The poll also indicated that Biden lags behind former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley in hypothetical matchups.
Biden’s approval ratings are currently below the mid-40s, mirroring former President Donald Trump’s standings in 2019, and several points lower than Ronald Reagan, Barack Obama, and Bill Clinton at a similar phase of their reelection campaigns.
On the other hand, Biden’s potential opponents also have their share of challenges. The poll indicated that 44% of voters believe any Democratic candidate would be a superior choice over Trump, with both Biden and Trump’s favorability ratings being tied at a low 35% among the general public.
The poll painted a bleak picture of Biden’s performance in office. His job approval rating stands at a mere 39%, with 58% of respondents saying his policies have negatively impacted the US economy, marking an 8-point increase since last fall. A staggering 70% believe the country is heading in the wrong direction.
The public’s perception of Biden is also largely negative, with only 28% expressing confidence in him, a decrease of 7 percentage points since March. Only 26% believe he possesses the endurance and acuity to serve effectively as president, a drop of 6 points from March.
In a theoretical Biden-Trump rematch, the poll found that registered voters are currently split between Trump (47%) and Biden (46%). However, presidential elections are decided by the state-by-state votes that form the electoral college, which may tilt the race in favor of the Republican candidate in a tight national ballot.
The CNN Poll was conducted by SSRS from August 25-31.

Why It Matters: These findings come in contrast to previous Benzinga reports that showed Biden leading Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in hypothetical matchups.
Biden’s struggles in recent polls, as reported by Benzinga, are attributed to concerns about his age and economic policies.
Despite Trump’s legal challenges, he remains a strong contender, with his influence within the Republican party seemingly growing.
As the 2024 elections approach, both parties are gearing up for intense campaigns. The political landscape remains fluid, with potential shifts in voter sentiment expected as the election draws nearer.
