Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Friday announced her decision to run again for reelection to regain control of the House and thwart any potential comeback from former President Donald Trump.
What Happened: During a recent interaction with her supporters, Pelosi revealed that her decision to run was not only driven by the need to cater to San Francisco’s “special needs” but also by her commitment to halt Trump’s possible return to power, Politico reported.
Pelosi also referred to her recent trip to Italy where she met with top European officials. During those meetings, she sensed a palpable global concern about the future of American democracy, particularly if Trump were to return to the helm.
"People there were so concerned about our democracy, as concerned about what happens if what's-his-name ever would become president again in terms of Ukraine, in terms of NATO, in terms of the transatlantic alliance and the rest," she said.
"It was amazing, I mean, I was on the front page of the four leading newspapers of Italy because of their concern about all of this."
Pelosi aims to use her influence to rally support for the Democrats and the country. She also hinted at serving a full term upon reelection, albeit with a caveat of a possible early exit.
"My decisions in life are not predicated on his [Trump’s] insanity," she said, adding, "It's important to make sure that our flag is still there."
Why It Matters: The decision by Pelosi to run again comes as the race for the 2024 presidential election heats up. Trump is a leading GOP candidate for the Republican presidential nomination. However, his political future hinges on a Supreme Court decision that is likely to determine his eligibility for the 2024 race following his recent indictments in the Jan. 6 probe.
In November, Pelosi had expressed concern about Trump’s potential return and the impact it might have on the country. She had stated that Trump’s candidacy would be detrimental to the U.S., accusing him of undermining the integrity of the country’s elections and encouraging individuals with values contrary to the nation’s democracy to seek office.
Pelosi’s decision echoes the sentiment of other Democrats like Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD), who, in July, opted to run for reelection instead of a vacant Senate seat, intending to stop “Trump and his followers” in their tracks.
