Tesla Inc.’s TSLA electric vehicles will possibly have no side or rear view mirrors in the future.
What Happened: In a recent post on X, formerly Twitter, Elon Musk shared his vision of a mirrorless future, stating, "No side or rear view mirrors in the future."
Musk's response came after a user shared a photo of a black Tesla without a rear view mirror along with the caption, "No Mirrors Necessary."
X users debated the idea with several noting the benefits of cameras over mirrors while yet others pointed out the lack of permit for the same. A few even noted the lack of risk of malfunction with a mirror.
“But Elon, what if we’re in a mud rally. The cameras get soiled… The good old mirrors, you can just open the windows throw the content of a bottle of water on them and you see again clearly,” a user wrote.
“When oh when will NHTSA allow this?,” yet another asked.
“Cameras are far more reliable, plus no dead angles,” a user opined.
Why It Matters: Tesla vehicles have several cameras to monitor its surroundings besides mirrors. In a Tesla car, a camera is mounted above the rear license plate, in each door pillar, and to each front fender. Three cameras are also mounted to the windshield above the rear view mirror.
