Republican presidential hopeful Chris Christie publicly criticized Donald Trump for declaring he would “love” to debate Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, after the former President skipped the first GOP debate.

What Happened: Christie lambasted Trump’s comments made on Wednesday to radio host Hugh Hewitt during a CNN interview.

Christie, the ex-governor of New Jersey, used Trump’s remarks to fundraise for his campaign. He posted a donation link on X, formerly Twitter, and stated, “Keep me on the stage for when the coward finally shows up to debate me.”

"Donald Trump wants to debate Meghan Markle but not his opponents? What a joke," Christie wrote.

"I'm sure they'd have a great debate on Spotify."

"If people really want to have the real issues that are concerning their lives, like inflation, our role around the world, a troubled education system, crime and law and order in our cities, debated — we need to have serious candidates on that stage," he told CNN in an interview.

Christie had previously run against Trump in 2016 and has been one of his most vocal GOP critics. After Trump failed to attend the first debate, Christie branded him a "certified loser."

Earlier this week, Trump had responded affirmatively to the suggestion of debating Prince Harry‘s wife to boost ratings.

Trump, the current GOP frontrunner, said, “I'd love to debate her. I would love it.”

These developments come as the Republican National Committee announced stricter criteria for the second debate in California, requiring candidates to meet higher polling and donor thresholds.
