Former GOP Rep. John Katko (N.Y.) expressed concerns over recent polls that showed a hypothetical match-up between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump.
Despite Biden’s declining numbers, Trump is not outpacing him, prompting Katko to suggest the Republican Party should be alarmed, reported the Hill citing Katko’s interview on ABC’s “This Week.”
What Happened: On the show, Katko emphasized that Trump is on par with Biden, stating, “Trump is not beating him. Trump's even with him.”
He further highlighted that among the potential GOP contenders, only Nikki Haley has a significant lead over Biden. A CNN poll released last week supports this, showing Haley leading Biden 49% to 43%.
Katko’s remarks come at a time when Democratic voters are also expressing concerns about Biden’s age, given that he is 80. Despite Biden’s known accomplishments, Katko believes the poll numbers are deteriorating, not improving. He urged the Republican Party to recognize the potential opportunity if Trump is not the nominee.

Why It Matters: The recent polls and Katko’s comments underscore the challenges Biden faces in his re-election bid. While Biden has announced his intention to run in 2024 and has not faced significant opposition within his party, concerns about his age and performance persist.
A previous Benzinga article highlighted that more than half of the Democrats are worried about Biden’s age. Furthermore, despite his achievements, Biden’s poll numbers have been on a decline, suggesting that the Republican Party has a real opportunity to capitalize on this situation, especially if they consider candidates other than Trump.
