Elon Musk Biographer Walter Isaacson's Interview Raises Speculations On Tesla Robotaxi Design

Tesla Inc TSLA investor and popular YouTuber Dave Lee speculated about the EV giant’s upcoming robotaxi.

What Happened: Lee assumes a photograph shown in the backdrop of a video released by CBS Sunday Morning to be an early robotaxi design. CBS released a segment titled ‘Walter Isaacson on the volatile Elon Musk‘ on Sunday in which the biographer talks about the persona of the billionaire and his relationship with his aides and array of companies. Isaacson’s biography on Musk titled ‘Elon Musk’ will officially release on Sept.12.

At nearly 4:09 in the video, it shows a snapshot of Tesla designer Franz von Holzhausen demonstrating a wooden design and in the backdrop is a picture that Lee assumes is an early robotaxi design.

“Very interesting choices by Tesla – one row of seats, luggage storage in rear, likely folded stainless steel. Definitely looks like something from the future,” Lee wrote.

Why It Matters: Musk reiterated on Saturday that its Robotaxi vehicle will look like the future after rumors said that both Tesla's $25,000 car and dedicated Robotaxi offering will be Cybertruck-inspired. "No, but Robotaxi will look like the future," Musk wrote, without elaborating.

During the company's second-quarter earnings call in July, Musk said that its dedicated Robotaxi will be a revolutionary design made in a revolutionary way.

“It'll be by far the highest units per hour of any vehicle production ever,” Musk said, while adding that he was very excited about the same. Musk has been touting the idea of fully autonomous Tesla vehicles functioning as a Robotaxi since 2019.

"This is the product that makes Tesla a ten-trillion company," he reportedly told Isaacson about the robotaxi. "People will be talking about this moment in a hundred years."
