Desantis And Trump Ready For Showdown Over GOP Delegate Rules At California Convention

Behind the scenes at California’s GOP convention, a major clash is brewing between allies of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and former President Donald Trump over new delegate rules, NBC News reported.

The dispute centers on a change made by the party in late July, transitioning California’s delegate allocation from a district-based system to a potential winner-take-all state. This means that if a candidate secures more than 50% of the statewide vote in the 2024 race, they will receive all the delegates. If no candidate achieves this threshold, delegates will be allocated proportionally.

The Trump campaign supports the new rule, while DeSantis allies have criticized it. Previously, delegates were awarded to the top two finishers in each congressional district, a system that would have favored DeSantis, who is currently the second-highest polling contender in the GOP primary.

Super PAC Never Back Down, backing DeSantis’ presidential bid, ceased its door-knocking operations in California last month, citing the rule change as a primary factor. Spokesperson Erin Perrine labeled the change as “Trump-inspired rigging” and hoped the rule could be altered at the convention.

The convention will see both DeSantis and Trump as scheduled speakers, and the final delegate rules will be confirmed on the last day of the convention, Oct. 1.
