A video circulating online of the Tesla Inc‘s TSLA Cybertruck has raised concerns about road safety, as it shows the vehicle’s aero wheel cap detaching on the freeway, nearly hitting another car.
What Happened: The 52-second video, possibly captured on a dashcam, was reportedly filmed near Fremont, California. However, its source could not be independently verified.
The video depicts the wheel cap flying into the air and narrowly avoiding other vehicles, suggesting that these caps may be removable.
At Tesla’s annual shareholder meeting in May, Elon Musk confirmed that the Cybertruck’s delivery event is scheduled for later this year.
Given the proximity of the delivery date, Tesla may need to promptly address this wheel cap issue.
Why It Matters: Musk has previously touted the Cybertruck as superior to the Ford F-150 and faster than a Porsche 911. More details will emerge as the delivery date approaches.
In May, a German newspaper, Handelsblatt, reported on an engineering report intended for internal use that revealed design flaws in the Cybertruck. The document, dated Jan. 25, 2022, was obtained by a whistleblower and contained thousands of internal documents.
The report highlighted basic issues with the Cybertruck’s suspension, body sealing, noise levels, handling, and braking. An expert automotive engineer who reviewed the document believes that Tesla has the capability to address these problems.
