Republican presidential candidate and former Arkansas Governor, Asa Hutchinson, has expressed doubts about former President Donald Trump’s ability to secure a win against his successor Joe Biden in the 2024 elections.
What Happened: Hutchinson, during a CNN interview, stated, “I don't believe he can beat Biden.” Hutchinson argued that Trump’s “isolationist” political style is now outdated and ineffective, reported The Hill.
Even with Trump currently ahead of Biden in the polls, Hutchinson maintained that “Trump's weaknesses are going to manifest even more as this campaign goes on.” He expressed concerns over the potential impact of Trump’s candidacy on Senate and House races.
Hutchinson also took a jab at “Trump light” candidates such as Vivek Ramaswamy, claiming their policies do not represent the core values of the Republican Party. He believes that Republican voters will eventually gravitate towards candidates who uphold principles of small government and fiscal responsibility.
Despite his criticism of Trump, Hutchinson’s campaign has struggled to resonate with Republican voters. Polling averages show a mere 0.2% support for him.
Why It Matters: Hutchinson’s comments add another layer to the ongoing debate within the Republican Party about Trump’s political future. Hutchinson has previously questioned Trump’s eligibility to run for President, citing the 14th Amendment in response to Trump’s actions on January 6, as reported by Benzinga.
Trump, on the other hand, has continued to engage with the media, providing an interview with Tucker Carlson even as the GOP presidential candidates were partaking in their first debate, as noted by Benzinga .
He told Carlson that Hutchinson was “weak and pathetic” when asked if there were people who shouldn’t be running for president.
