U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) may be facing the end of his tenure despite recently initiating an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden. This news surfaces from a report by Reuters on Monday.
What Happened: McCarthy, the leading Republican in Congress, is slated to face a divided caucus on Wednesday. His leadership position is under threat from the far-right, even though he has kickstarted an impeachment inquiry into President Biden, as demanded by hardline conservatives.
After enduring weeks of pressure from hardliners and former President Donald Trump’s allies, McCarthy’s decision allowed him to sidestep almost 20 House Republicans who opposed the action, thus dodging a likely unsuccessful floor vote.
Despite McCarthy’s impeachment inquiry announcement, hardline Representative Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) hinted at the possibility of ousting McCarthy based on a deal that McCarthy consented to when he assumed the speaker role. This agreement empowered any member to call for a vote on his removal.
“The path forward for the House of Representatives is to either bring you into immediate, total compliance or remove you,” Gaetz said in a House speech addressing McCarthy, reported Reuters.
Hardliners are pressurizing McCarthy to reject any short-term stopgap spending measure that doesn’t include border security provisions and other conservative priorities.
Representative Chip Roy (R-Texas) confirmed that McCarthy failed to bring forth several measures stipulated by Gaetz. Nonetheless, Roy deflected questions concerning McCarthy’s future as speaker, focusing instead on meeting hardline spending targets and addressing border issues.
Why It Matters: This turn of events follows McCarthy’s recent announcement of his intention to launch an official impeachment inquiry into President Biden over unverified allegations of financial gains from his son’s overseas business dealings.
McCarthy’s position is critical in the current political climate, especially with the possibility of Democrats regaining the House majority in the 2024 elections due to recent redistricting court rulings.
