For the first time, President Joe Biden addresses the Republican-led impeachment inquiry announced by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy earlier this week, NBC News reported.
Biden made these comments at a campaign reception in McLean, Virginia on Wednesday.
"I don't know quite why, but they just knew they wanted to impeach me. And now, the best I can tell, they want to impeach me because they want to shut down the government,” said Biden.
"So look, look, I got a job to do. Everybody always asked about impeachment. I get up every day, not a joke, not focused on impeachment. I've got a job to do. I've got to deal with the issues that affect the American people every single solitary day," he added.
Earlier this week, McCarthy announced that he was instructing three House committees to initiate an impeachment inquiry. This move came after he had previously stated that he would not open such an inquiry without first holding a floor vote.
Also looming is the Sep. 30 deadline for Congress to fund the government to avoid a shutdown. Some hard-line GOP House members are advocating for spending cuts in the funding legislation that Biden will need to sign to keep the government open.
In his announcement on Tuesday, McCarthy described the impeachment inquiry as a “logical next step” after months of investigations led by House Republicans into President Biden and his son Hunter Biden. Nonetheless, these probes have not found any evidence of misconduct by the president or links between him and his son’s foreign business affairs.
