Tesla Drops Model Y Standard Range AWD From Website: Focus Shift Or Production Strategy?

EV giant Tesla Inc TSLA has stopped taking orders for its Model Y standard range all-wheel-drive SUVs.

What Happened: The U.S. edition of Tesla’s website now only shows the Model Y Long Range and Performance editions.

The standard range AWD Model Y was previously priced at $47,740. The Long Range and Performance versions are priced higher at $50,490 and $54,490, respectively.

The reasons for the change are not evident. Tesla enthusiasts, however, are predicting different reasons including that the company may be channeling the 4680 battery cells used in the vehicle for cybertruck production.

Yet another predicts the move to be aimed at differentiating the price points of the Model 3 and the Model Y. The two pricier versions of the Model 3- Long Range and Performance- are priced closer to the Model Y.

Why It Matters: Earlier this month, Tesla also removed standard range versions of its Model S and X vehicles from its website, despite it being only weeks since their initial debut. The website now only showcases long-range and plaid versions of the two models.
