Chinese EV giant BYD Co Ltd BYDDF BYDDY said over the weekend that it has made half a million BYD Yuan vehicles while its U.S. counterpart Tesla Inc TSLA said that it has produced its five millionth car.
“The 500,000th BYD YUAN officially rolled off the production line, a testament to our unwavering dedication to a greener Earth,” BYD said on X, formerly Twitter. It is worth noting that the company, which has several models, is announcing the milestone solely for its BYD Yuan model and not its entire lineup.
The back-to-back announcements by the two companies is indicative of the close rivalry between the two EV companies. BYD’s 5 millionth new energy vehicle rolled off the production line last month on August 9th. Tesla said on Saturday that it produced its 5 millionth car during the week, about a month later.
However, it is worth noting that BYD’s new energy vehicles include both hybrid and battery electric vehicles (BEV) unlike Tesla which solely makes BEVs.
Tesla delivered 466,140 cars in the second quarter while BYD sold 703,561 units from April to June.
