California Governor Gavin Newsom vehemently refuted the Republican assertion that Democrats support unrestricted abortion rights, even post-birth.
What Happened: Newsom dubbed the claim as “total B.S.” during an extensive interview with CNN’s Dana Bash.
“It's made up, it's a political thing. People are not seeking abortion at the end of the cycle,” Newsom said.

The California governor was responding to former President Donald Trump‘s recent statement from an interview on NBC’s “Meet The Press” that aired Sunday. Trump had propagated the controversial claim, which Newsom has now dismissed as a “false flag.”
Newsom further stated that Republicans had resorted to this narrative due to their misplaced stance on the issue. “This is where they need to go in order to get out of a mess they've created because they don't believe in fundamental choice and freedom for women,” He said.
The governor concluded his remarks by stressing that the issue had been manipulated for political mileage. “I call B.S. on this whole debate, it is purely a political canard,” he added.
Why It Matters: Newsom’s rejection of the Republican claim doesn’t surprise him as he’s known for his outspoken views. Last week, he criticized House Speaker Kevin McCarthy‘s impeachment efforts against President Joe Biden, labeling it as a “student government” endeavor. He also mocked the GOP‘s impeachment attempts, referring to it as a joke.
Meanwhile, Newsom expressed his support for President Biden amid concerns over his age, calling him a “seasoned pro.”
