Tesla Inc TSLA CEO Elon Musk, on Monday, touted its upcoming Cybertruck as the much-needed “change” in auto design.
What Happened: Musk posted a picture of the cybertruck on X, formerly Twitter, in response to Twitch co-founder and ex-CEO Emmett Shear who shared the designs of SUVs manufactured by different automakers. While there are indeed minor differences between one vehicle and the other manufactured by companies including Ford, Mercedes and Hyundai, the changes are thin with the car retaining largely similar overall shape and structure.
“I've noticed this same trend whenever I look at new cars…,” Shear wrote. “…what's caused this convergent evolution? Is it really regulatory standards, or is this kind of hybrid SUV some optimal point in design space?”
Musk didn’t write anything or add anything to his post besides the picture that shows the angular frame of the Cybertruck. However, the picture is largely self-explanatory with Cybertruck’s frame standing out in stark contrast with the silhouettes shared by Shear.
Why It Matters: Since its unveiling in 2019, the Cybertruck has been one of the most anticipated product launches from the Tesla stable. At the company’s annual shareholder meeting earlier this year in May, Musk confirmed that the Cybertruck delivery event would be held later this year.
While most cars are endoskeleton-based, the Cybertruck is an exoskeleton-based car made of cold-rolled stainless steel. The “radically new,” “futuristic” design was derived initially from movies, sci-fi and video games by Musk after finding conventional truck design ‘boring,’ his biographer Walter Isaacson previously said.
