EV giant Tesla Inc TSLA has said that all its cars rented by Hertz Global Holdings Inc HTZ in the U.S. will now have access to Tesla app.
What Happened: With access to the Tesla app, users can use keyless lock/unlock via phone key, remotely precondition the cabin, or track charge status.
During the company's second-quarter earnings call in July, Hertz CEO Stephen Scherr said that EVs account for 11-12% of Hertz's overall fleet and that it is majority Tesla units. On average, Hertz had a fleet of 560,000 vehicles in the quarter, he added.
Public Reaction: “Oh man, the full experience should be appreciated with every rental. Nice move for both Tesla and Hertz!,” a user wrote.
“Very clever way to build loyalty/affinity for both brands! And, down the road, you'll hear the competition say, "Ouch! That Hertz!",” another user chimed in.
“Let's make sure they all have a mobile charging cable too,” a user wrote, referring to how Hertz rents out Tesla vehicles without mobile charging cables claiming that customers do not return them. Last month, Musk said that Tesla would look into the practice.
