If you play Epic Games' Fortnite, chances are you could be entitled to a share in Tencent Holdings Ltd.-owned TCEHY company's $245 million settlement. The US Federal Trade Commission fined the company $245 million in March this year, and now, eligible users can file their claims.

What Happened: Epic Games will pay out $245 million as a part of its settlement with the US Federal Trade Commission after it was found using dark patterns for in-game purchases.

In an order in March this year, FTC said that Epic Games charged parents and gamers for unwanted items and other in-game purchases. To make matters worse, the FTC also found that Epic Games locked out customers’ accounts who disputed wrongful charges on their credit cards.

While FTC did not specify the number of Fortnite gamers impacted by this, it said "millions" of gamers have been sent emails notifying them about the settlement.

Who Is Eligible For $245M Fortnite Settlement?

According to the Fortnite settlement terms, the following people can claim their share of the settlement:

Those who were charged in-game currency for unwanted items between Jan. 2017 and Sept. 2022.

Parents of children who made in-game purchases in Fortnite without their knowledge between Jan. 2017 and Nov. 2018.

Gamers whose accounts were locked between Jan. 2017 and Sept. 2022 after they disputed wrongful charges on their credit cards.

You should also be a US citizen and at least 18 years old to file a claim. If you are not 18 years old, your parent or guardian must file the claim on your behalf.

How To Claim: The last date for filing your claim in the $245 million Fortnite settlement is Jan. 17, 2024.

Here's how to file your claim:

  • Head over to fortniterefund.com.
  • To apply for a refund, you will need a claim number or your Epic Account ID.
  • If you have the claim number, select the relevant option and click Next.
  • Otherwise, select No and then click Next.
  • Now, enter your claim number or Epic Account ID.
  • Click Next and follow the on-screen instructions.
