With a potential government shutdown looming, President Joe Biden expressed serious concerns at a dinner event, while also advocating for his second term alongside Vice President Kamala Harris, CBS News reported.
Biden warned of the consequences if Republicans in Congress fail to act, stating that “America could be forced to pay the price.”
Speaking at the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) dinner, Biden highlighted the impact of a shutdown on various sectors, from food safety to cancer research to early education programs.
Biden attributed the potential crisis to “extreme Republicans” disregarding a prior debt ceiling agreement. He emphasized that funding the government is among the “most basic responsibilities of Congress.”
House Republicans are strategizing to move forward with a package of appropriation bills this week. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy expressed hope that a short-term resolution could keep the government open.
During the dinner, Biden and Harris made a strong case for their re-election in 2024. Biden referred to his age, stating that despite this, he helped the nation recover from a challenging period.
The VP stressed the administration’s commitment to issues affecting communities of color, promising to sign bills focused on reproductive rights, anti-gun, and civil rights legislation.
