Will Hurd Says Trump Vying For Presidency Not To Make America Great Again: 'He's Running...To Stay Out Of Prison'

The latest assertion from GOP presidential candidate, former Rep. Will Hurd (R-Texas), is that ex-President Donald Trump is vying for the presidency, not for the nation’s welfare, but to avoid potential jail time.

What Happened: According to The Hill, Will Hurd made the contentious statement on Monday. Hurd accused Trump of trying to evade prison by launching another presidential campaign, instead of genuinely wishing to Make America Great Again.

"The problem that I have with Donald Trump is, is Donald Trump's not running for president to Make America great again. He's running for president to stay out of prison,” said Hurd on “NewsNation Now With Connell McShane,” according to the report.

Hurd also accused Trump of pilfering notions proposed by Paul Ryan, the House Speaker, and ex-Representative Kevin Brady.

This disclosure follows last month’s indictment of Trump and 18 associates by a Georgia grand jury, linked to attempts at overturning the 2020 election outcome. Trump also faces three additional indictments this year regarding his business conduct, mishandling classified documents, and post-2020 election activities.

Despite the second GOP presidential debate being slated for Wednesday, Trump plans to deliver a speech in Detroit, coinciding with an ongoing United Auto Workers strike.

Why It Matters: Trump’s mounting legal troubles pose a substantial threat to his 2024 presidential run. These legal entanglements could tarnish his public image and even impede his ability to run for office, or worse, lead to incarceration.

Trump’s legal woes escalated with an FBI raid on his Southern Florida estate, which became a GOP discussion point about a possible conspiracy against Trump.

In June 2023, Trump made history by becoming the first president to face federal charges for mishandling classified documents.

A recent NBC News poll also underscored increasing voter apprehensions about a Trump-Biden rematch in 2024, with 62% of voters expressing concerns about Trump’s legal disputes.
