Apple Inc.’s AAPL latest smartphone series, the iPhone 15 lineup, has garnered massive attention for overheating issues shortly after its launch, prompting experts to examine the potential causes behind these concerns.
What Happened: Reports of overheating are plaguing Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro models. Users have experienced the devices reaching scorching temperatures, some even likening it to holding a miniature furnace.
One user reported temperatures as high as 118ºF during regular use, a level of heat that could potentially cause first-degree burns.
Now, Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst at TF International Securities, has shared a survey result shedding light on the root causes of this problem.

He asserted that the overheating issues are not tied to the advanced 3nm node used by Apple’s chip supplier, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Ltd TSM.
Instead, Kuo pointed to compromises made in the thermal system design to reduce the device’s weight, including a smaller heat dissipation area and the use of a titanium frame.
Kuo also raised concerns about the limitations of addressing this issue through software updates, stating, “Improvements may be limited unless Apple lowers processor performance.”
If not adequately resolved, these problems could potentially affect iPhone 15 Pro shipments over the product’s life cycle.
Apple did not immediately respond to Benzinga’s request for comments.
Why It’s Important: Previously, it was reported that the iPhone 15 Pro’s A17 Pro chipset, which promises outstanding performance, may also contribute to the excessive heat.
A heatmap analysis revealed that the area around the chipset is the hottest on the device despite a heat shield designed to dissipate heat.
In addition to the overheating, users have reported unexpected throttling and scratches on the new titanium design, casting a shadow over the iPhone 15 Pro’s much-anticipated features.
Apple unveiled its latest iPhone lineup consisting of four models: the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max earlier this month and it started selling on Sept. 22.
Kuo previously predicted that Apple would sell 80 million units of the iPhone 15 series this year.
