Ted Cruz, Marsha Blackburn Among 19 Senate Republicans Who Opposed Short-Term Funding Bill Amid Shutdown Threat

A short-term funding measure aimed at averting a government shutdown received opposition from 19 Senate Republicans during a Tuesday vote, The Hill reported

The Senate vote was 77 to 19, with the dissenting votes all from the Republican Party.

Among the opposing Senators were Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), Mike Braun (R-Ind.), Katie Britt (R-Ala.), Ted Budd (RN.C.) Ted Cruz (R-Texas), Steve Daines (R-Mont.), and several others.

While Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Jim Risch (R-Idaho), Tim Scott (R-S.C.), and Tina Smith (D-Minn.) did not cast a vote, with Smith earlier reporting a positive COVID-19 test.

The Senate’s majority vote prepares for the passing of a continuing resolution (CR) later this week, potentially pressuring the House to avoid a shutdown scheduled for Oct. 1.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) seem to be in agreement to avoid the shutdown that could halt numerous government services and furlough thousands of workers.

Meanwhile, discord within the House GOP has hindered an agreement on a short-term funding measure, with some staunch Republicans vowing to oppose a CR.

In a bid to appease conservative House members, House Republicans advanced four of the 12 full-year spending bills in a 216-212 vote Tuesday night, though this does nothing to prevent a shutdown.
