Violence and intimidation on the picket lines of the ongoing United Auto Workers (UAW) strike have heightened as automakers express increasing frustration.
Stellantis NV STLA accused the UAW on Thursday of misrepresenting incidents involving non-replacement employees, reported CNBC. Stellantis claimed it has experienced an uptick in threatening and even violent behavior from UAW picketers, including tire slashing, vehicle jumping, stalking, and racial slurs.
Stellantis clarified it hasn’t hired any external workers to substitute for the striking UAW members and urged UAW leaders to help ensure the safety of all its employees, including those on the picket line.
This comes amid reports of union members facing confrontations, intimidation with firearms, and hit-and-run incidents. Five individuals sustained minor injuries when a vehicle, operated by a third-party contractor working for General Motors Co GM, drove through a UAW picket line at a GM parts facility in Flint, Michigan. GM has since banned the driver and two other contractors from its premises and called on other contractors and salaried employees to adhere to safety protocols.
