Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter is marking his 99th birthday with a digital homage, showcasing messages from thousands of admirers globally. This unique tribute has been displayed across prominent Atlanta sites.
The Carter Center, an Atlanta-based human rights organization, initiated the project. Over 14,000 people have submitted birthday messages and pictures for the digital mosaic, paying tribute to Carter’s life and legacy, The Guardian reported.
Jason Carter, the former president’s grandson and chair of the Carter Center’s board of trustees, noted the widespread influence of his grandfather. “There's so many people around the world, around the country, in this state that he touched,” he said.
Jimmy Carter, now the longest-living U.S. president and a Nobel peace prize laureate, has faced several health challenges in recent years, including a cancer diagnosis in 2015, which he overcame. Despite these challenges, he has continued his work with Habitat for Humanity.
The celebration comes amid Carter’s decision to enter hospice earlier this year. His wife, Rosalynn Carter, also announced a diagnosis of dementia in May. While the former president has curtailed public appearances, he recently surprised attendees at the annual peanut festival in his hometown of Plains, Georgia.
The Carter family plans to mark the occasion with a small gathering in Plains. “This is bonus time for all of us,” Jason Carter stated.
The mosaic is viewed as a testament to Carter’s enduring legacy, offering citizens an opportunity to share their personal experiences influenced by his policies and actions. “Regular people in tiny towns or in small communities are the ones who transform the world,” Jason Carter said. “They're the ones who make up the legacies that we have.”
