Jimmy Carter's 99th Birthday: Grandson Shares Former President's Secret To Longevity

The longest-living U.S. President, Jimmy Carter, is turning 99 on Oct. 1, and his grandson claims exercise and love are the secrets to his longevity.

Jason Carter, a former Georgia state senator, said in a video chat that his grandfather’s commitment to regular exercise, like jogging and cycling, has significantly contributed to his long life. “Stay active,” Jason recommends, TIME reported.

However, Jason acknowledges that his grandfather might have a different answer. He believes Jimmy Carter would say that his wife of 77 years, Rosalynn Carter, is his life’s pinnacle, which is the real secret to his longevity.

Despite facing physical limitations after a serious fall in 2019, the former president, currently in hospice care, plans to celebrate his birthday in a small family event at his home in Plains, Georgia.

Jason regards his grandfather’s presidency as a “millennial presidency,” noting his early focus on issues like climate change, energy consumption, social justice, and human rights, which are currently critical concerns for the millennial generation.
