A former taxi driver and seasoned judge Arthur Engoron is set to preside over a significant lawsuit against former President Donald Trump‘s business empire.
In a recent report, the Associated Press shed more light on Engoron who is an Ivy League-educated judge. His history includes a rich tapestry of experiences from driving a taxi cab as a student at Columbia University, participating in the Vietnam War protests, to playing in a band.
After getting his law degree from New York University in 1979, Engoron worked as a litigator and a law clerk for 11 years for a judge in the same court where he now presides. Often considered kind and approachable, Engoron also has a knack for inserting pop-culture references during his rulings.
Now, he stands at the cusp of a career-defining moment, determining the future of Trump’s real estate empire. The lawsuit, initiated by New York’s Attorney General Letitia James, is slated to commence Monday.
In a previous ruling, Engoron decreed that Trump deceived for years by inflating his wealth and the value of his assets on financial documents to secure loans and strike deals. As a consequence, some of Trump’s companies may risk dissolution, potentially affecting iconic New York properties like Trump Tower.
The Attorney General’s office is pursuing $250 million in damages. Trump, a potential witness in the trial, has voiced his dissatisfaction with the judge’s fraud ruling, dubbing it the “corporate death penalty”. Trump criticized Engoron as a “political hack” and expressed intentions to appeal.
