Apple Inc. AAPL unveiled the highly anticipated iPhone 15 Pro series at Apple Park, featuring some crucial performance and design improvements over older iPhones. From the high-performance A17 Pro chipset to better optics and a new titanium design, there are quite a few things to unpack here.
While upgrading from the iPhone 14 Pro to the iPhone 15 Pro might not make a lot of sense, moving up from the iPhone 13 Pro might offer some meaningful improvements.

iPhone 15 Pro vs iPhone 13 Pro
1. USB-C
One of the highlights of the iPhone 15 Pro is the USB-C port. While Apple did not tout it as an “innovative” addition, it did underline the benefits of this universal port within its own ecosystem as well – the USB-C port is now available on MacBooks, iPads, iPhones, and even AirPods.
The iPhone 15 Pro uses USB 3.0, which supports up to 10Gbps data transfer speeds.
2. A17 Pro Chipset
The brand-new A17 Pro chipset powers the iPhone 15 Pro. Apple says that this is the “biggest redesign in the history of Apple GPUs”. It supports hardware-based ray tracing, which Apple claims is four times faster than software-based solutions.
On the other hand, the iPhone 13 Pro is powered by the A15 Bionic chipset – while it is a powerful chipset compared to the competition, even two years later, the A17 Pro chipset is more powerful.
The iPhone 15 Pro also has more memory – at 8GB, compared to the iPhone 13 Pro, which has 6GB of RAM.
3. Titanium Design
Apple has upgraded the design of the iPhone 15 Pro models to Grade 5 Titanium with a brushed look and contoured edges that make it more comfortable to hold the phone.
On the other hand, the iPhone 13 Pro features a stainless steel design with squared edges – one of the complaints with this design has been how the phone digs into the palms.
Apple has also managed to reduce the weight of the iPhone 15 Pro by nearly 10% compared to the iPhone 13 Pro, to 6.6 ounces from 7.2 ounces. While this might seem like a small change, it makes a big difference when you hold the phone.
4. Better Optics
Another major upgrade the iPhone 15 Pro offers over the iPhone 13 Pro is the optics – the primary camera has seen a major resolution bump to 48MP from the iPhone 13 Pro's 12MP.
Apart from better sensors, the sensor size is larger on the iPhone 15 Pro's triple camera setup than the iPhone 13 Pro.
Apple has also made some improvements in the software department, with features like Smart HDR 5, Action mode, Photonic engine, and more, offering major camera upgrades.
5. Action Button
The mute switch is now dead, replaced by the Action Button. This button is customizable with eight different actions.
The iPhone 13 Pro, on the other hand, features the iconic mute switch. On a positive note, this provides a one-click toggle. However, the Action button offers wider customizability, which is better in the long run.
6. Better Display
While the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro have a 6.1-inch display with nearly the same pixel density, Apple has made a couple of upgrades regarding the underlying technology.
Unlike the iPhone 13 Pro, the iPhone 15 Pro's display uses LTPO technology that allows Apple to smartly switch the refresh rate all the way down to 1Hz. This helps in conserving power when the display has minimal information visible.
The iPhone 15 Pro's display also gets considerably brighter than the iPhone 13 Pro – its peak brightness has been upped to 2,000 nits, compared to the iPhone 13 Pro's 1,200 nits. This should make it easier to use the phone under direct sunlight.
7. Dynamic Island
Another important change is Dynamic Island – the iPhone 15 Pro has it, while the iPhone 13 Pro uses the boat-shaped notch.
While Dynamic Island has had its share of critics, it has been quite nicely integrated with a wide range of apps for live notifications. Apple has managed to convert the notch into something useful instead of it hanging around and doing nothing.
8. Charging And Battery
Another notable upgrade the iPhone 15 Pro offers is faster wired charging speeds – according to Chargerlab's tests, the iPhone 15 Pro supports 25W wired charging, which is notably faster than the iPhone 13 Pro's 15W speed.
The iPhone 15 Pro also has a slightly larger battery at 3,274mAh, compared to iPhone 13 Pro's 3,095mAh battery.
