Trump's Niece Outrages Against Congress' Ukraine Aid Compromise As 'Travesty Forced On Us By Party Of Putin'

Zinger Key Points
  • For passing the stop-gap bill to avert a potential government shutdown, Democrats had to agree to defund Ukraine.
  • This was made possible by arm-twisting by the Putin wing of the Republicans, says Mary Trump.

A government shutdown was averted after a stop-gap bill was passed by the Congress, with either party giving in a bit from their hard stances. Donald Trump's niece Mary Trump was not too impressed with the compromise the Democrats made with respect to aid to Ukraine.

What Happened: “Shutdown averted (temporarily), but no aid to Ukraine. What a travesty forced on us by the party of Putin,” Mary Trump said in a post on X, formerly Twitter, immediately after a deal was clinched.

The former president's niece also reposted a Daily Beast story authored by David Rothkopf, CEO of the media company Rothkopf Group, in which he said the only win was for the Kremlin. “Every word of this” is true, she said.

Defunding Ukraine – A Dangerous Priority: Reps. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla) and Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga) threatened to oust House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif) if he did not play along with their demands to make cuts to critical social programs including child care, Head Start, Meals on Wheels, law enforcement, housing and more, Rothkopf said in the report.

The conservative duo also sought to cut the “salaries of senior officials including Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, and were willing to throw millions of government employees—including the military, the Border Patrol, the IRS, administrators of aid programs and others—out of work, thus harming the lives of tens of millions more Americans,” he added.

McCarthy then agreed to put forward a so-called “clean” Continuing Resolution that would extend funding for government programs until Nov. 17 of this year but this came with a concession, Rothkopf said. It was decided to defund Ukraine aid, which progressive commentator Josh Marshall referred to as “one sloppy kiss with Vladimir Putin,” he added.

“The Putin wing of the GOP and all those who have enabled them made it crystal clear that of all their dangerous priorities, the most important was to strengthen America's enemies, weaken our allies, and to put democracy at risk overseas just as they are doing here at home,” Rothkopf said.
