Tesla's Cybertruck Launch Appears To Be Heading For Another Delay

The launch of Tesla Inc. TSLA’s much-anticipated Cybertruck seems to be hit with another delay, missing CEO Elon Musk’s third-quarter target. The first customer trucks were expected to be handed over in late September, an event yet to be announced.

According to a Business Insider report, signs of a possible delay emerged over the summer, causing industry analysts and fans to grow anxious. Production started in earnest during this period, and the sightings of the truck have been increasing.

However, there was no mention of Cybertruck during the company’s third-quarter delivery report on Monday, which reported deliveries of 435,059 vehicles, missing Wall Street expectations by around 26,580 cars.

Over the summer, Musk made last-minute demands regarding the truck’s appearance, yet no date has been set for a launch party for the Cybertruck order-holders. Musk first announced the truck in 2019, and initially aimed to start production in 2021.

In a leaked internal email earlier, Musk requested the Cybertruck to be “designed and built to sub 10 micron accuracy”. This demand, which would require flaws in the Cybertruck to be invisible to the naked eye, is said to be impossible at the production phase, according to manufacturing experts.

Furthermore, some order-holders have expressed concerns over the lack of details shared by Tesla about the Cybertruck. Details like pricing and available builds are typically released well before the launch of a vehicle.

In late August, Tesla announced that customers could buy invitations to a Cybertruck delivery event using 30,000 referral credits. However, a date for this event has yet to be set.
