In the wake of the ongoing Ukraine crisis, former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has expressed confusion over American citizens who back Russian President Vladimir Putin, as per a The Hill report published on Tuesday.
What Happened: During a conversation with PBS NewsHour’s Geoff Bennett, Clinton voiced her concerns about the rising support for Putin within the U.S. “I don't understand any American siding with Putin, but we've seen it and we've heard it and we have to fight against it,” she stated. The discussion mainly revolved around the increasing political divide in the U.S. regarding the Ukrainian conflict.
Clinton also addressed the heightened tension in Congress concerning funds for Ukraine amid a potential government shutdown threat. She responded to former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s (R-Calif.) questions about renewed funding for Ukraine and his call for a “plan for victory” against Russia.

Why It Matters: Clinton’s bewilderment at American support for Putin is not surprising, considering her past warnings about Putin’s tactics.
This month, she expressed fear about potential election interference by Putin in the 2024 U.S. presidential election, as per a Benzinga article.
She had stressed the importance of discussing potential election interference, asserting her belief that Putin would meddle in the U.S. elections if given a chance.
In June 2022, Clinton also pointed out Putin’s inability to handle criticism, particularly from women. She described his self-perception as “messianic,” according to another Benzinga report .
Given these factors, Clinton’s recent comments highlight not just the increasing divide within American politics, but also the potential impacts of this division on international relations and conflicts, such as the ongoing Ukraine crisis.
