Acting Speaker McHenry Orders Nancy Pelosi To Vacate Capitol Office: 'Please Vacate The Space Tomorrow'

In a new development on Capitol Hill, acting speaker Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.) has mandated former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) to vacate her office at the Capitol by Wednesday.

What Happened: According to Politico, an email was sent to Pelosi’s office ordering the former speaker to leave her office space. The email, written by a senior aide from the Republican-led House Administration Committee, explained that the room needed to be cleared for use as a speaker’s office.

"Please vacate the space tomorrow, the room will be re-keyed," wrote the aide, according to the report.

Following the removal of McCarthy on Tuesday, McHenry, a key McCarthy supporter, stepped in as acting speaker. In the House, only a select number of lawmakers are given hideaway offices in the Capitol, in contrast to the Senate’s normal practice.

Pelosi voiced strong opposition to the eviction, labeling it a significant break from tradition. She pointed out that during her term, she had allowed ex-Speaker Dennis Hastert to utilize a larger office suite for an indefinite period.

Due to her participation in memorial services for the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein in San Francisco, Pelosi was unable to gather her belongings. Feinstein was a close friend of Pelosi’s.

Why It Matters: This development comes in the wake of a historic vote in the House of Representatives, which saw Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) removed from his leadership role due to internal GOP discord. The motion to oust McCarthy was initiated by Rep. Matt Gaetz due to McCarthy’s cooperation with Democrats to prevent a government shutdown.

Earlier, Pelosi had announced her decision to run again for reelection to regain control of the House and counter any potential return of former President Donald Trump. Her decision was influenced by her commitment to halt Trump’s possible return to power and cater to San Francisco’s “special needs”.
