Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif) was ousted as speaker of the House, marking the first such instance in U.S. history, in a rebellion spearheaded by the hard-right conservative wing of the Republican party. And former President Donald Trump‘s niece took a sarcastic jibe at his short-lived stint.
What Happened: Mary Trump, an author and podcast host, said in a post on X (formerly Twitter), “Kevin McCarthy served as speaker for approximately 27 Scaramuccis.”
McCarthy became the speaker on Jan. 7, after an unprecedented 15 ballots, as some of his own party and the entire Democratic contingent opposed him.
To win the coveted post, some concessions had to be made to appease the right wing, including allowing a single House member to introduce a vote to remove the speaker, as well as granting Freedom Caucus members three seats on the influential Rules Committee.
The motion to oust McCarthy was initiated by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) and it received 216 votes. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.) has been named interim Speaker of the House.
Efforts are on among the GOP hardliners to nominate former President Donald Trump as the speaker.
Scaramucci Story: Scaramucci, or merely “Mooch,” is a humorous unit of measurement that evolved from the very short tenure funder manager Anthony Scaramucci had as White House communications director. His short stint lasted 10 days between July 21-31 of 2017.
His ouster was precipitated by a New Yorker interview in which he slammed the Trump administration on the assumption that it was an off-record conversation.
McCarthy now has the dubious distinction of having the third shortest tenure as the speaker, having been in the post for 269 days. Mary Trump's calculation, therefore, measured McCarthy's tenure as 27 Scaramuccis.
The man behind the measure chimed in as well. Reposting Mary Trump's post, Scaramucci said, “24.54 was the exact count. We round down if you are keeping score at home.” Apparently, he assumed 11 days as his stint as the communications director of the White House.
