Trump's Former Personal Lawyer Rudy Giuliani Sues Biden For Defamation Linked To 'Russian Pawn' Remark

Ex-New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani has launched a defamation lawsuit against President Joe Biden over a comment Biden made during the 2020 presidential debates.

What Happened: As per a Business Insider report published on Wednesday, the lawsuit was filed in Merrimack Superior Court, New Hampshire. The suit alleges that Biden, then a presidential candidate, tarnished Giuliani’s reputation during a televised debate on October 22, 2020, by calling him a “Russian pawn”. Additionally, Biden dismissed Giuliani’s remarks about his son Hunter’s laptop as “a bunch of garbage”.

The suit alleges that these remarks were false and detrimental to Giuliani’s reputation. It states that these comments continue to undermine Giuliani’s credibility and restrict him from holding positions of trust and independence. Giuliani’s “sterling and unimpeachable character,” highlighted by his career achievements, is also mentioned in the suit.

In recent years, Giuliani’s actions have been deeply intertwined with former President Donald Trump’s political trajectory. Giuliani was Trump’s personal lawyer during the 2020 elections and traveled to crucial swing states to dispute Biden’s victories. In August, Giuliani’s legal team revealed that the former mayor was facing “financial difficulties”.

Why It Matters: Giuliani’s legal woes have been escalating in recent years. He was indicted alongside former President Trump, relating to charges associated with the 2020 election, as per a Benzinga report in September. Furthermore, he faced another lawsuit from President Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, tied to a controversial laptop.

Giuliani was also sued by his own lawyers for nearly $1.4 million over unpaid legal bills related to his attempts to reverse the 2020 election outcome, according to another Benzinga report.
