Meta Platforms Inc.’s META Threads, dubbed “Twitter killer,” has consistently witnessed a decline in its user base and engagement. The platform might now be planning to add some new features to bring back some of the traction it got in the first five days of its launch.
What Happened: On Wednesday, Chris Messina, the innovator often credited with introducing hashtags to the social media landscape, took to Threads and shared a screenshot on the platform, suggesting the impending arrival of “Voice posts, GIFs, and polls.”
While some users pointed out that GIFs were already accessible on Threads, Messina said this functionality was lacking on desktop.
The introduction of these features could raise hopes for increased user engagement, but netizens remain skeptical.
One person highlighted the importance of tracking live conversations through trends and hashtags, stating that these elements are crucial for attracting and retaining users.
Another user echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the need to prioritize trending and hashtags for Threads’ resurgence.
For the unversed, Meta’s Threads experienced a meteoric rise, amassing 100 million users within its first five days of launch. However, the platform now faces stiff competition from established platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter).
Why It’s Important: It is worth noting that Messina spotted potential new features on Threads on the same day Musk’s X decided to stop showing headlines on articles shared on the microblogging site. X now only shows the article’s lead image and the domain.
Previously, in August, Musk confirmed this development, stating that it will “greatly improve the esthetics.”
The tech billionaire also continues to mock Mark Zuckerberg, his social media platforms, and the people seemingly siding with the Meta CEO.
