How Close Are We To All-Electric Supercars? A Long Way Off, Thinks McLaren CEO

McLaren Automotive Ltd‘s CEO, Michael Leiters, recently shared his perspective on the future of all-electric supercars, which he believes is still a long way from the present.

What Happened: According to Leiters, the development of lighter battery technology is key, and he doesn’t anticipate it being ready for true supercars until 2030.

"I don't expect this technology to be ready for real supercars before the end of the decade," Leiters told Bloomberg from McLaren’s new showroom in Dubai.

“Heavier cars aren’t nimble enough and McLaren would not be venturing into making cars that weigh two tons.”

Weight must, instead, come down to the 1,500 kg range, he added.

Why It Matters: McLaren has already delved into hybrid supercars, exemplified by the McLaren P1, a plug-in hybrid introduced in 2013.

Several other sportscar makers, including Automobili Pininfarina and Lamborghini, are also venturing into EVs.
