Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) has expressed readiness to work with the White House if elected as the Speaker of the House.
What Happened: Jordan, who is leading an impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden, in an interview with NBC News, said, "If I get the votes and we get the privilege of being speaker…we’ll deal with them.”
“They’ll deal with us. That’s how it works.”
Jordan’s announcement for the speakership race comes in the wake of the historic ousting of Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.). In a letter to GOP members, Jordan emphasized the need for the Republican conference to fulfill their promises to Americans.
"We are at a critical crossroads in our nation's history. Now is the time for our Republican conference to come together to keep our promises to Americans. I respectfully ask for your support for Speaker of the House of Representatives," Jordan said in his letter.
Why It Matters: Following McCarthy’s exit, speculations initially revolved around Jordan and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) as potential successors. Nonetheless, other contenders like Rep. Kevin Hern (R-Okla.) are now emerging.
The speaker candidates are scheduled to present their cases to the Republicans on Tuesday, with a vote expected on Wednesday. The new speaker will require near-unanimous party support due to a 9-vote majority.
The former U.S. president, Donald Trump, is reportedly mulling over a visit to the Capitol next week. An insider revealed that Trump may propose his candidature for the role of House Speaker during this visit.
Meanwhile, Former Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) has voiced opposition, describing Jordan as “the worst pick for the Speaker of the House.” "This is a guy that basically has made it clear that his whole goal isn’t to govern, it’s not to legislate; it’s to destroy the Democrats," he added.
