The Biden administration’s decision to extend the US-Mexico border wall in Texas has led to Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) commending the move while also criticizing the administration’s previous policies.

Grassley stated that the expansion validated Republican border policy and argued that earlier steps taken by the Biden administration had triggered widespread undocumented immigration, necessitating the wall’s extension, The Hill reported on Thursday.

In a post on X, previously known as Twitter, Grassley wrote, “never shld hv taken Pres Biden this long to agree WALLS WRK. This admins policies encouraged illegal immigration &created humanitarian crisis+strained town resources across US Now that big blue cities r facing reality of crisis Biden admin starts 2wake up?? Praise the lord FINALLY.”

The administration announced its decision to waive 26 federal regulations to accelerate the construction of the border wall, spanning 20 miles of the US-Mexico border in Texas. This has drawn criticism from both Democrat and Republican lawmakers alike.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas negated claims that this decision indicates a change in policy. “From day one, this Administration has made clear that a border wall is not the answer. That remains our position and our position has never wavered,” he stated on Thursday.

President Biden clarified that legal constraints forced the administration’s hand in this matter. Funds for the new Texas wall were already allocated during the Trump administration, and the Biden administration could not divert these funds elsewhere, despite attempts to do so.

Mayorkas emphasized the pressing need for a new border wall. “There is presently an acute and immediate need to construct physical barriers and roads in the vicinity of the border of the United States in order to prevent unlawful entries into the United States in the project areas,” he stated.
