Marjorie Taylor Greene Slams House GOP For 'Throwing The Gavel On the Floor' — Laments 'Serious Weakened Position' Of US Amid Israel's Declaration Of War

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) on Sunday said the U.S. is in a “serious weakened position” due to a vacant Speakership, coinciding with Israel’s formal declaration of war.

What Happened: Greene, in response to Fox News’s Maria Bartiromo’s query on whether the Speakership election would be “expedited” following the deadly attacks on Israel, said, "Yes, absolutely."

Greene emphasized that the Republicans’ control of the House of Representatives is barely maintained and reminded viewers that the House is only one-third of the federal government.

"What happened last week, I completely disagree with it, was eight Republicans joining with all the Democrats in the House and basically throwing the gavel on the floor and saying it's now up for grabs [for] anyone that wants it. This is not a serious thing to do when you control the House of Representatives," she said.

Why It Matters: The search for a new leader has begun among House Republicans following the historic removal of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) last week. Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) have already announced their pursuit for the position.

Staunch Donald Trump ally Greene has refused to endorse a candidate before receiving clarification on certain legislations. She particularly wants to hear their stance on legislation banning gender-affirming surgeries for children and ending aid to Ukraine amid its battle against Russia’s invasion.

"I want to hear our Speaker candidates answer these questions. And that's the right thing for me to do. I demand answers. I represent my district, and whoever wants to be Speaker needs to be able to answer how they'll handle those particular issues," she said.
