Fierce Trump Critic Rep. Will Hurd Drops Out Of 2024 Presidential Race, Backs Nikki Haley

In a new development, former Rep. Will Hurd (R-Texas) has decided to cease his 2024 presidential race, while also expressing his support for Nikki Haley as the Republican nominee.

What Happened: As unveiled by Politico on Monday, Hurd has decided to step back from his presidential campaign, which was primarily centered around his criticism of ex-President Donald Trump. This comes at a time when his party appears to be inclining more towards Trump’s policies.

Announcing the suspension of his campaign and endorsing Haley, Hurd took to X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

Hurd, the last major contender to enter the crowded Republican primary field in late July, has been unable to create a significant impact as a moderate aiming to steer the party away from Trump’s “Make America Great Again” movement.

Despite his efforts, Hurd could not qualify for either of the first two GOP debates held in Milwaukee in August and Simi Valley, California, in September.

In an earlier turn of events, another Republican contender, Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, had also suspended his campaign following his inability to make it to the first debate stage.

Why It Matters: Hurd’s exit follows his failure to gain traction in a party that appears to be increasingly leaning towards Trump. According to a Benzinga report in in September 2023, Hurd had suggested that Trump was running for president to avoid possible imprisonment, not for the country’s welfare.

In August, Hurd had expressed his concerns about some GOP contenders’ soft stance towards Russian President Vladimir Putin amidst a mysterious plane crash in Russia involving the leader of the Wagner Group, as Benzinga reported .

Back in June, Hurd had criticized both Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for their approach to the Ukraine war, highlighting the need for strong leadership on the global stage and real experience in national security matters, as per a Benzinga article.
