ByteDance-owned TikTok and Meta Platforms Inc.’s META Instagram continues to maintain their dominance as the world’s most downloaded apps in September, while Elon Musk’s X and Mark Zuckerberg’s Threads remain notably absent from the rankings.
What Happened: In September, TikTok once again clinched the title of the most downloaded app globally, with an impressive 50 million new downloads. This marked a slight dip from August but reaffirmed TikTok’s unwavering popularity.
Meta’s trio of social media giants—Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp—followed closely behind TikTok. While their rankings remained consistent with the previous month, the overall downloads declined, according to app intelligence platform Appfigures.

A notable presence in August and September was Pavel Durov’s Telegram, which has secured its position in the top five downloaded apps.
Notably, Musk’s X (formerly Twitter) and its competitor, Threads, failed to secure a spot on the list in September, signaling a downward trend for the platform. The report mentioned that Threads “still managed to make it into millions of devices, but not enough, and the trend is sloping down.”
However, Musk’s social media platform wasn’t mentioned at all.
Last month, it was reported that X has found itself in dire straits, with a significant 18% drop in app downloads compared to last year.
X, which once boasted impressive monthly user additions since 2011, saw its fortunes plummet to an alarming low, attracting a mere 10 million users between August and September. This steep drop in interest represents one of the lowest points for the platform since it went public in 2013.
Why It’s Important: Last week, it was reported that several tech influencers, including Michael Fisher and social media commentator Matt Navarra, have voiced their concerns about Musk and X as they consider leaving the platform.
While Zuckerberg’s Threads has been accused of not being interesting enough for users’ long-time attention, Musk’s X is being targeted because the tech billionaire tends to introduce random changes and bring chaos to the platform.
