Apple Inc.’s AAPL iPhones continue to be exceedingly popular among American teenagers, with 87% of them already owning an iPhone, while 88% expect it to be their next phone, according to a report by investment firm Piper Sandler.
What Happened: The biannual survey highlights the unwavering appeal of iPhones among teens, as this sentiment has remained remarkably positive.
Teenagers surpassed the 80% threshold for owning or anticipating an iPhone as their next device back in Spring 2018. Since then, their loyalty to the brand has only strengthened, with the percentage consistently increasing or remaining stable over the years.
Additionally, the report revealed that the Apple Watch has also gained traction among teenagers, with 34% of those surveyed now owning one, compared to 31% the previous year.
However, enthusiasm for purchasing a new Apple Watch in the next six months has dipped to 10%, down from 16% the previous year.
Why It Matters: The enduring popularity of iPhones among teenagers demonstrates a brand loyalty that other smartphone manufacturers have struggled to replicate.
Apple’s unique use of blue bubbles for iMessage and green bubbles for messages sent by Android users has contributed to this trend, as many teenagers have a strong preference for blue bubbles and are seemingly averse to green ones.
This color-coding system has been a source of contention in the Android world, leading companies like Google, Samsung, and OnePlus to criticize Apple for coloring their messages green.
It is evident that this seemingly minor design choice has played a significant role in strengthening Apple’s appeal among younger users.
