Trump Attorneys Insist On Delaying Classified Docs Trial Until Post-Election: 'Reckless Effort To Try To Obtain A Conviction'

Lawyers representing former President Donald Trump are intensifying their efforts to postpone his trial involving classified documents until after the 2024 presidential elections,

As reported by NBC News, in a court filing in Florida, Trump’s legal team argued that the trial, originally set for May, should be deferred by at least six months due to another federal trial where Trump is a defendant. They claimed that the prosecutors from special counsel Jack Smith‘s office have not yet delivered all the evidence.

Trump’s attorneys, Todd Blanche and Christopher Kise have asserted that they are still unable to access nine documents that Smith’s office accused Trump of retaining illegally post his White House tenure. They also alleged that the prosecutors have not clarified why a set of discovery materials, which doubled the volume of materials, was recently withheld.

The lawyers argued that the special counsel’s simultaneous demands from the two cases against Trump are hampering his defense and infringing his right to due process.

“The Special Counsel's Office is engaged in a reckless effort to try to obtain a conviction of President Trump prior to the 2024 Election, no matter the cost. The Court should not permit the use of the criminal justice process toward that end,” Trump’s lawyers wrote.

Earlier this summer, the Florida federal court overseeing the case had dismissed a similar request to delay the classified documents trial until November 2024. The special counsel’s office refrained from commenting on the new filing but referred to a filing submitted earlier this week concerning Trump’s request for trial postponement.

Smith’s office dismissed the “unfounded claims” by Trump’s attorneys about “Government noncompliance with discovery obligations” and stated that their exaggerated claims about their inability to review classified information do not validate their request for adjournment.
