The Israeli Ambassador to the U.S., Michael Herzog, confirmed on Sunday that Israel has “no desire” to reoccupy the Gaza Strip, currently under the governance of Hamas, amidst escalating conflict with the Palestinian-based militant group.
As per a report from The Hill, Herzog made these remarks in response to queries posed by CNN’s “State of the Union” host, Jake Tapper, about Israel’s future plans for Gaza and the status of Palestinians who had fled the area.
“We have no desire to rule over the lives of over two million Palestinians,” Herzog emphasized.
He also expressed Israel’s intention to ensure the safety of innocent civilians, accusing Hamas of endangering them.
Herzog’s comments follow a deadly attack on Israel by Hamas, the militant group governing Gaza. The week-long conflict has resulted in over 3,600 casualties across Israel and Gaza.
The Israeli armed forces have initiated a counteroffensive, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowing to impose a “huge price” on Hamas for the assault. It has been 18 years since Israel withdrew settlers and military forces from Gaza under the directive of then-Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.
